The Saxon Crosses
W. G. Collingwood in his study of Anglian and Anglo-Saxon sculptures in the North Riding, expresses the opinion
that Brompton was the cultural centre of the spreading fashion in design for wheel headed crosses.
The Brompton examples, executed in brown freestone using the chisel and the pick, are indeed fine specimens of
Pre-Conquest sculpture in the North and they cover a fairly wide period of manufacture.
