Operation Gairatpur Baas 2011
The idea behind the trip was to enable everyone to find out something of Indian culture.
To help the Baas Educational Trust (BET) to see how they work and to
tour the "Golden Triangle".
The wall built round one of the trees to provide a shaded seating area has prooved to be problamatic with the potential for
the children to run into it whilst playing sports.
Our job was to remove the wall and raised area and rebuild it round another tree away from the sports field.
Our first few days were spent in Delhi and later in our stay we spent a week touring.
Where is it located?
The school and Tikli Bottom are in the village of Gairatpur Baas about 50Km south of Delhi.
You can read more about the school and BET on their web site.
Preparation
Over the year preceding our trip, we held various events to raise funds for both our travel costs and for the School.
All members of the BARNES Explorer Scout Unit helped with the events, not just the team going out to India.
Each Explorer Scout going to India was Expected to complete the Young Leader Scheme as part of the preperation for going out to work
with young children in the school.
We held a number of "Team Weekends" including things such as a service day at the Watson Scout Centre. At the end of May we were
able to meet Martin and Annie for dinner whilst they were vising Yorkshire.
These were just some of our fund raising events:
The Expedition
The Expedition team would like to thank the following for their help:
- The whole Unit for their support;
- Parents of all the team members;
- Sylvia, Reg, Mary, Bob and Margaret for all their help with planning and running the events;
- Everyone who sponsored the trip and gave donations for the school;
- Moses for an excellent transport service for our time in India;
- Martin and Annie for putting us up (or should that be putting up with us?)
Following our return from India in 2011
We had a weekend away with the rest of the BARNES Unit where the India 2001 team were able to put togther their individual diaries
and expedition report.
The Explorer Belt presentation as part of the Morning Service at Brompton Methodist Church on 9th October 2011.
The fund-raising events have continued.
